2. Set Profile: 1932 Bulgaria Sport-Photos

Despite the sometimes misleading set name, this set was produced in Germany. The cards were distributed by the Bulgaria Cigarette Company of Bresden to coincide with the 1932 Olympics in Berlin. The white bordered black and white cards measure about 1-5/8 by 2-3/8 inches and have no labeling on the front. They are not listed in the American Card Catalog (ACC).

Only one card in the 272-card set carries an image of a baseball player. The card, numbered 256, shows a photo of Babe Ruth along with boxing champion Max Schmeling (see example at left).

Under the heading Bulgaria Sport-Photos, the card backs are numbered. In addition, they carry a brief description of the subject(s) on the card front, followed by an ad for obtaining an album to contain the cards.

The soft-bound album (see image at right) measures approximately 10 x 12 inches. In addition to baseball and boxing, the numerous sports represented in the album include golf, hockey, ice dance, rowing, sailing, soccer, swimming, tennis, skiing and other winter sports.

Curiously, the sportsman featured on the album cover is standing tall with his arm outstretched and holding a (presumably Bulgaria) cigarette.

A Set Profile for the Bulgaria Cigarette set has been added to the Old Cardboard website.

Note: Another sportscard series aimed at the German market was produced in the same year (1932) by a Bulgaria Cigarette brand competitor, Abdulla Tobacco.

The Abdulla cards are slightly larger, measuring 1-11/16 by 2-1/2 inches. The Abdulla card fronts carry the subject's name and home country.

As with the Bulgaria set, the Abdulla cards are printed in black and white with text on the back printed in German. The Abdulla set features 200 cards and is not listed in the ACC. Ruth is also the only baseball player in the Abdulla set (see example at left).

Abdulla also produced an album to contain the cards. Because both sets were produced in the years leading up to WWII, the cards are considered scarce, with the Abdulla cards being somewhat more difficult to find.

A Set Profile for the Abdulla Tobacco set has also been added to the Old Cardboard website.
