2. Featured Set: 1950 Connie Mack Book Cards

1950 Connie Mack Book Dust Cover

This interesting and obscure set of only four cards was issued as part of a promotion for Connie Mack's 1950 book titled "My 66 Years in the Big Leagues."

The four cards in the set depict Mack (pictured as a player in the 1880s when Mack was in his twenties), Rube Waddell, Babe Ruth and Christy Mathewson. Each simple but attractive black and white card measures 2-1/4 by 3-1/2 inches and is printed on a sepia toned stock. The full body action poses are labeled on front with the player's first and last name.

The card backs are titled with the player's name along with a summary of his team affiliations. This is followed by a narrative of several paragraphs about the player, with an ad for Mack's book at the bottom.

The cards are listed in the American Card Catalog as set H801-6. The set was originally issued in a small folder entitled "Four Mighty Heroes" that was distributed with some of the books.

Mack's book was very successful. Used copies can be found today with relative ease. The cards, however, were apparently distributed by only a few booksellers and are seldom seen by today's vintage collectors.

1951 Connie Mack Book Cards

As the book subtitle "The Great Story of America's National Game" suggests, it contains many ancedotes of the author's seven decades in baseball. Divided into 24 chapters, it is illustrated with nearly 70 photographs and contains numerous first-hand stories about many of the legends of the game.

A Set Profile, Player Checklist and Gallery of Cards for the 1950 Connie Mack Book Promotion have been added to the Old Cardboard website.

4. CNB Indians Cards Mailer Reported

Input recently received from subscriber Rob Dewolf helps to clarify and add new information about an obscure regional series described in an article in Issue #26 (Fall 2011) of Old Cardboard magazine.

The article profiles a twenty-card set orginally distributed by Central Bank of Cleveland featuring exclusively members of that city's American League Indians franchise. An example card of Hall of Famer Larry Doby from the set is shown at right.

As noted in the article, only one card from the set (that of Early Wynn) has showed up in some recent hobby checklists. Further, the set has been dropped entirely from the current edition of the Krause Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. However, Dewolf states that he recently completed the set and knows of at least two other Cleveland-area collectors that also own complete runs of the elusive cards from the series.

In addition, Dewolf forwarded a scan of an envelope (shown at left) used by the bank to distribute cards to its young depositers.

The cards in the 1952 CNB set measure 4-7/8 by 6-3/4 and each pictures the player in a full body action pose. His bio and playing record through 1951 are also shown, along with a facsimile signature and an Indians logo.

Five of the twenty players in the set have since been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

All card backs are blank.

Note: A Set Profile along with a complete Player Checklist and Card Gallery of the 1952 Central Bank of Cleveland set was recently added to the Old Cardboard website.
