2. E270-2 Colgan's Camnitz Card "Rediscovered" Although the Colgan's E270-2 "Tin Tops" card of Pirates pitcher Howie Camnitz was included on early hobby checklists, the existence of the card has been questioned by many collectors of the set for more than two decades. But thanks to input from advanced vintage collector and Old Cardboard subscriber Richard Masson, the long "lost" Camnitz card has now been verified and is alive and well and living in Kentucky--the state from which it was originally distributed. In a 1996 article written by veteran collector and dealer Larry Fritsch (1936-2007) and published in the Vintage & Classic Baseball Collector (VCBC, Issue #8, September/October 1996), Fritsch questioned the existence of about two dozen cards from the E254 Stars of the Diamond subset that he believed were placed on the then-current E254 checklist in error. Now, two decades later, none of those cards have been verified by the hobby and they have been removed from many hobby checklists. In addition, Fritsch identified cards of two players (Camnitz and Hanford) from the E270-2 Tin Tops set that he believed did not exist. The discovery of the Camnitz card pictured above is the first and only Colgan's card identified as erroneous by Fritsch that has now been confirmed to exist. Masson also reported several other E270-2 "Tin Tops" cards not previously found on hobby checklists. These include: Hunter (Minneapolis); George Merritt (Buffalo); Perry (Providence); Bud Ryan (Cleveland) and Ed "Tubby" Spencer (St. Paul). All of the above cards have now been added to the Tin Tops checklist on the Old Cardboard website. *     *     *     *     *     *     *     *     * In related news, Colgan's collector John Spano has reported the discovery of a very interesting and unique Colgan's card from the "208" sub-series (front and back image shown at left). Note the very rare "208 In Present Series" printed across the bottom on the back of the card. Of particular interest is the absence of any team affiliation labeling on the front of the card. To our knowledge, this is the only Colgan's example that does not contain a team label. Also of special note is the "Kroh" label printed at the top of the card front. In all other Colgan's cards, as in the E270-2 Camnitz example above, the player's name is printed on the left side of his image, or on a very limited basis in the Red Borders subset, at the bottom of the player image. A Set Profile and Player Checklist that encompases all three Colgan's subsets (i.e., E254 Stars of the Diamond, E270-1 Red Borders and E270-2 Tin Tops) are provided on the Old Cardboard website. The Checklist is sortable by player last name, team or league. A complete Gallery of all 289 known cards (including all team variations) in the E254 subset is also provided on the website. Latest Additions to the OldCardboard.com Website We are continually expanding the Old Cardboard website with more set profiles, checklists and card galleries. Recent (past 30-40 days) additions include: A Group (Type-Card) Gallery has been added for Exhibit Cards (a subgroup of "W" cards). Such Group Galleries are listed at the beginning of each Group Index accessible on the navigation bar at the top of each page on the website. They function as "type card" galleries within each major card group. They are intended to help streamline the identification of various card sets and provide a visual path to the Profile pages on the Old Cardboard website for each set. Each card image in the group represents a vintage baseball card set and includes a link to more detailed information about the issue. Set Checklists have been substantially updated for: 1909-13 Colgan's Chips (including all major sub-series) Updating the website with checklists and full set galleries for additional vintage sets is an ongoing project, so check back often to check out the latest additions. There are now many thousands of card images on the website and the list continues to grow every month.
