2. Set Profile: 1951 Wheaties "Test Issue" The 1951 Wheaties Test Issue (also referred to as the Wheaties Premium Photo Set) is a relatively obscure group of twelve cards issued around 1951. The images are mostly (but not all) portraits, some of which were displayed on the backs of much more widely distributed Wheaties boxes the following year. Little is known about the origins of the obscure issue. Set checklists circulated within the hobby and in price guides have been incomplete until the past several years. Based on research by Old Cardboard reader Tim Begley, the checklist is now considered complete at twelve cards. These include nine baseball subjects along with athletes from three other sports (figure skating, golf and tennis). The 5 by 7-inch black & white cards have white borders. The subject's full name is printed in all capital lettering at the bottom. All card backs are blank. The cards are sequenced by the letters "A" through "L" printed near the bottom right corner of the card. The sequence letters all carry the prefix "A8491" without any sponsor identification. It is speculated that the set was produced as a test issue to determine popularity of the photos for later use in a redemption premium. But because contracts were apparently never completed with two of the subjects (Mickey Mantle and Al Rosen), the distribution of the set was ended. The 1952 Wheaties card of Stan Musial (above) is clearly based on the same photographic pose used in the 1951 Wheaties "Test Issue" shown at right. Although there is no sponsor labeling printed on the cards, the set has been attributed to Wheaties brand cereal, a brand of Minnesota-based General Mills, Inc. However, because several of the images used in the 1951 "Test Issue" are also found in a 60-card set printed on the back of boxes of Wheaties cereal the following year, the two sets have long been linked and attributed to the Wheaties brand. Examples of the Musial card from both sets are illustrated here at approximately the same scale.
