Set Summary
  • Woodcuts published weekly in the New York Clipper newspaper
  • Founded in 1853, Clipper was a leading sporting & theatrical paper
  • Two series totaling 68 player portraits with bio write-ups
  • Ran in 1879 (Series 1; 40 players) and 1880 (Series 2; 28 players)
  • Initial 9 woodcuts were numbered and made up Prize Winning Team
  • Note: this 68-player subset was part of a series of more than 800 players profiled by the New York Clipper from 1869 to 1903. The full 800-player run (including both player portraits and biographical narratives) is printed in a two-volume compendium "The Complete New York Clipper Baseball Biographies: More than 800 Sketches of Players, Managers, Owners, Umpires, Reporteers and Others, 1859-1903" compiled by Jean-Pierre Caillault. See Old Cardboard eNewsletter #65 (September 2009) for a more detailed review of the book.
