Although it is an extremely scarce issue, the 1879-80 N.Y. Clipper Woodcut picturing Dan Brouthers marks his earliest individual appearance on a baseball collectible. The first traditional baseball card picturing Brouthers originates from the 1887-90 Old Judge set. In addition, Brouthers also appears in a much less popular 1887 set, the Buchner God Coin issue which reuses the same drawings for multiple players. One other baseball card appearance for Brouthers during the 1887 season comes within the Gypsy Queen set, an extremely rare tobacco issue. Subsequently, Brouthers was included in a very popular issue produced in 1888, the Goodwin Champions set. |
