Although it is an extremely scarce issue, the 1879-80 N.Y. Clipper Woodcut picturing John Monte Ward marks his earliest individual appearance on a baseball collectible. The first traditional baseball card picturing Ward originates from the 1886 Old Judge tobacco set. In addition, Ward also appears on an 1886 J. Wood Studios Cabinet card as part of a group of New York players photographed by the famous local studio. Another very scarce issue featuring a card of Ward was the 1886 Kalamazoo Bats series. Finally, another early card of Ward was produced during the 1887-90 time frame by the Old Judge cigarette brand. |
