The first card appearance for Luke Appling comes from a very difficult set to locate, the 1931-32 "4-on-1" Exhibits issue. Another very tough-to-find early card picturing Appling hails from the 1933 W574 strip card issue. Appling's first mainstream card was produced during 1934 by Goudey and remains one of his most popular issues to this day. Produced during the period from 1934-36, another early set containing an Appling card was the Batter-Up issue, which contained die-cut cards which were meant to be raised from their original card base and displayed. Additionally, there was one more scarce card of Appling issued during 1934 and it originates from the "4-on-1" Exhibits set.
