W-Cards (Strip Cards) For Sale
$475 From the increasingly popular 1930 W554 Strip Card set, this high-grade card features Hall of Famer Herb Pennock. All but one of the cards (including Pennock) in the W554 set share the same pose as the better known W516 Kashin issue. The card is in outstanding condition with no significant flaws and very minimal signs of corner wear. See the high-reslolution scans for detail. A Set Profile, Checklist and full Gallery for the W554 set is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
$495 A splendid example of the card of Hall of Famer Chuck Klein from the 1930 W554 set as listed in the American Card Catalog. All but one of the cards (including Klein) in the W554 set share the same pose as the better known Kashin W516 issue. The card is in exceptionally good condition as shown in the high-reslolution scans. A Set Profile, Checklist and full Gallery for the W554 set is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
Cabinet--Jack Pfiester $980 The cards in this set were issued throughout most of the first decade of the twentieth century. In all, more that 700 cards were produced by the Sporting Life, a nationally distributed newspaper published in Philadelphia. The Sporting Life premiums are designated as set W600 in the American Card Catalog. Curiously, this was done contrary to the normal convention that reserves the "W" prefix for strip cards. It is not currently known why J. R. Burdick, editor of the catalog, did not assign to this set the "M" prefix generally used for newspaper issues. This example card featurs John Phiester, pitcher of the Chicago Cubs. Significantly, the card has a very rare factory stamp on the reverse to state that "Duplicates of this phototype can be obtained from Sporting Life, Philadelphia, Pa. for 10 cents each ...." While a large majority of W600 cards have blank backs, the cabinets with this note stamped on the back are much more scarce (perhaps 1 in 50 to 100 cards). The card has light paper loss (gain?) on the front and back, which can be readily seen in the scans. Further information about the extensive W600 Sporting Life Cabinet Series is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
Uncut Sheet w/ DiMaggio, Boudreau & Kiner $790 These "Sports Exchange" cards were produced and distributed by one of the hobby's earliest publications. The set is designated as W602 in the American Card Catalog. It contains 108 cards that can be readily classified into three distict subsets, each containing six panels (36 cards). The offered 7 by 10-inch uncut sheet features six players including HOFers DiMaggio, Boudreau and Kiner. According to the Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards, the DiMaggio card is the highest valued in the set. The sheet is in exceptionally good condition as shown in the scans. A Set Profile and Checklist for the W602 Sports Exchange Miniatures is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
$1500 This very scarce Order Form card was used by collectors to purchase the 1947 W602 Sports Exchange Miniatures. The 4-1/2 by 10 inch forms were inserted into issues of the Sports Exchange Trading Post, an early hobby publication. A slightly different form was used for each of the three W602 subsets. This offered form was used for Series 1 (Green) cards from the set.
Subscribers were instructed to cut on the form's inside border to "fit yellow envelope" which was also inserted into the magazine (see example at right). The envelope is included as part of this lot. Both the Order Form and the Envelope are in very high-grade pristine condition. The visible fold in the Order Form is as issued. A Set Profile and Checklist for the W602 Sports Exchange Miniatures is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
An exceptionally scarce complete set of thirty 1931 Metropolitan Studio St. Louis Cardinals cards. Issued by Metropolitan Studio of St. Louis, each sepia toned card measures approximately 6-1/4 by 9-1/2 inches. The set is headlined by the earliest HOF Rookie Card of Dizzy Dean. Only the six HOFers in the set are shown in the photo.
Further information about the 1931 W754 Metropolitan Studio Cardinals Set is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
Offered is a 1927 W560 sheet of 16 cards--one of eight sheets that make up a full masterset that totals 128 cards. About half of the cards in the set feature baseball players. This is a full "red-on-red" sheet that includes Lloyd Waner, Willie Kamm, Hugh Critz, George Uhle, W. Clark, Larry Benton, Fred Fitzsimmons, and Andy Cohen along with eight other non-baseball-related celebrities. Aside from general signs of aging, the sheet is in very nice condition without any marks, creases, tears, pin holes or other major flaws (see front and back images for detail). Further information about the 1927 W560 Strip Card Set is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
Set #11 Complete w/Joe Jackson $1950 Headlined by Joe Jackson, the 12 cards in this "Set Number 11" of the W603 "All-Star Picture File" were produced by the Sports Exchange Trading Post, a pioneering hobby publication. Note: the W603 multi-set series includes 12 sets totaling 113 cards that were among the first baseball cards produced as World War II came to a close. This Set Number 11 "strip card" group was printed on 6 two-player "sheets" designed to be hand cut along a dotted line printed at the middle of the sheet. Each individual card measures roughly 5 by 7 inches. While the Joe Jackson card is clearly the key to this set, the series also includes four players that are now in the baseball Hall of Fame: Berra, Cochrane, Dean and Manush. Seven of the 12 hand-cut cards (including the Joe Jackson card) that make up this complete set have tape or tape residue at a corner or side of the card. Although visible, the tape detracts very little from the overall appeal of the cards, as seen in the high resolution scans. Otherwise, the cards are very clean and undamaged on both the fronts and backs. Further information about the W603 Sports Exchange Series of all 12 Sets is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
This W574 American League "Ball Park" complete set of 29 cards is both scarce and of unknown origin. Believed to be distributed in ballparks, the set features only American League players although no cards are known for the Yankees or Washington. Cards from this set are hand cut although the offered examples are cut with very uniform size and precision with very slight variations in size for several cards. Twenty-four of the card fronts are excellent or better including Grove, Faber, Appling, Simmons and Averill. Five are very good including Foxx. Two card backs (Burns and Kress) have residue/paper gain from previous mounting and one card (Peckinpaugh) has moderate writing on back. All other backs are as clean as when originally issued.
$1,580 This Cobb example is from the W516-1-1 subset of strip cards. The subset is part of a five-subset W516 group with each subset using the same 30-card checklist as well as the same player images. A description of each subset and their differences in card numbering, normal vs reverse images and fonts used for labeling is provided on the Old Cardboard website. As with most strip cards, those from this set are notoriously of low grade due mainly to being hand cut. And although this Cobb example has several vertical creases, it is cut and centered very nicely and has no tears or staining. A very appealing card that would fit well into any vintage collection (see high-resolution images for detail). Further information about the 1920-21 W516 Strip Card Set is provided on the Old Cardboard website.
$1475 This very obscure numbered set was printed on four sheets, each containing a team photo and sixteen player photos from the same team. The set derives its hobby name from the copyright printed at the top of each sheet. The cards carry the designation W504 in the American Card Catalog. The condition of the sheet is virtually flawless with light wear on the corners (see hi-res images for detail). Further information about the 1925 W504 Universal Toy & Novelty Set is provided on the Old Cardboard website. |
