1934 R310 Butterfinger Group of 36 Premiums
including Ruth, "Fox" and 14 other HOFers
$8,900

The popular 1934 R310 Butterfingers set features 65 players printed in large format (7-3/4 by 9-1/2 inches) on fragile paper stock. This lot of 36 premiums includes 16 HOFers and 20 "common" players from the 65-player set.

The sixteen HOFers (with their estimated condition) are: Averill (VG), Bottomley (EX), Cochrane (VG), Cronin (F; typing on back), Dickey (F; tape on back), "Fox" (F; see image above), Frisch (VG), Gehringer (VG), Gomez (F), Grove (VG), Hafey (VG), Harris (EX+), Ruth (G; see image above), Simmons (EX+), Lloyd Waner (VG) and Paul Waner (EX+).

The twenty common players are: Benton, Carroll, Chapman, Crowder. Ferrell, Fonseca, Haas, Hogan, Holley, Jordan, Lee, Mancuso, Melillo, Morrissey, Mowrey, Reynolds, Ryan, Spohrer, Vosmik and Whitehill.

The condition for the common player cards is generally consistent with that of the HOFers. There are no pinholes on any card and any tears or creases are minor. I will be happy to set up a FaceTime live video to display the premiums for any serious collector.

Note that the price for this partial 36-card group is about 20% lower than the total value if priced for each card individually.

1948 R421 Swell "Babe Ruth Story"
(Complete Original 28-Card Set)
$1,575

The 1948 (R421) "The Babe Ruth Story" set was issued by the Philadelphia Chewing Gum Company's Swell Gum brand. It was issued to help promote the movie by the same name, with William Bendix playing Ruth's role.

Notably, the film was released on July 26, 1948 while Babe Ruth was still alive, though he was in failing health at the time. Ruth actually made a brief appearance at the film's premiere at the Astor Theatre in New York City, which took place just three weeks before he passed away on August 16, 1948.

While many of the cards in the set feature scenes from the movie, several cards include poses of Ruth himself and are considered the key cards in the set. These "key cards" include #1 (Ruth sitting with Bendix), #16 (actual shot of the homer that set the 60 home run record), and the final four cards in the set showing Ruth with different actors in the movie (card numbers 25. 26. 27 and 28).

Overall, the condition of the set is above average (see high-resolution scans for details).

More information about the 1948 set is provided on the Old Cardboard website.

Two 1948 "The Babe Ruth Story" Publications
$250

Two original publications related to "The Babe Ruth Story" movie (and the 1948 R421 baseball card set) are offered here. Both are titled the same as the movie. Both are designed with red backgrounds and measure about 8-1/2 by 11 inches with staple binding. In summary, they are:

(1; top image) The softcover edition of the book by Ruth "as told to Bob Considine," a well known sportscaster of the period. The book is 94 pages in length, plus covers. It is segmented into 21 chapters that detail the various phases of Ruth's life. It is illustrated with some dozen and a half black and white photos and serves as the inspiration for the movie. Original selling price: $1.00.

(2; bottom image) Movie Program. The movie program is much shorter (12 pages plus covers). It profiles the movie cast and contains nearly 100 black and white photos that appear to come from the same photo library used for the cards. Original selling price: 25 cents. Note that while the softcover book sold for 4 times that of the original movie program, the program today is far more scarce and is valued much higher than that of the book--by a factor of about 10 to 1!

Overall, both publications are in excellent condition with signs of wear but still securely bound and without any significant flaws (see cover scans for detail).

1952 Topps Look-n-See Babe Ruth (with Decoder)
$1,250

Babe Ruth (Card #15) is widely considered the "anchor" of the 1952 Topps Look 'n See set. It is significant not just for its subject, but because Ruth is the only athlete featured in the entire 135-card historical series.

The subject's name and occupation are printed in a panel at the bottom of the card front.

The magic of the card back, however, is perhaps the most intriguing feature of the card's design. The white lettering over a reddish background displays the card number, names subject and offers summary biographical text. A trivia question related to the subject is then posed near the bottom.

A strip of reddish cellophane was also packed with the gum and card into the wrapper, with the cellophane used to decode the answer to the question on the back. By placing the cellophane over the back, (1) all of the white text is masked, (2) the answer to the question is revealed and (3) an image related to the subject of the card becomes visible (as illlustrated in the scan on the right above).

Note: While the reddish panel shown is part of this lot, it is not the original cellophane. It is a somewhat thicker rigid plastic. Its color, however, is perfectly matched to the card back and results in decoding functions that are perhaps better than the original cellophane. The card itself is guaranteed original. It is in Very Good or better condition and makes a novel conversation starter when added to any vintage collection.

1955 Topps Scoop -- Babe Ruth (HOF)
$430

The "Scoop" series of gum cards distributed by Topps in 1954 features key events in world history dating back to the middle ages.

The series includes just four cards featuring baseball events. As a result, the set also has wide appeal among non-sport collectors.

One of the four baseball events, as illustrated on this card, celebrates Babe Ruth slamming his sixtieth home run, making it the key card in the entire set.

As the scans show, this example is in VG or better condition with sharp corners and no significant flaws.

Further details about the 1954 Topps Scoop set are provided on the Old Cardboard website.

Purchase

1934-36 R318 National Chicle Batter-Up Photo Premium -- Pepper Martin
$1,415

Barely known to many advanced collectors, these premiums are described in the final version (2015) of the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards as follows:

"These are the pictures that were mentioned on the wrappers of the high-number series of Batter-Up cards, and were apparently designed to be handed out by the retailer to the purchaser of each penny pack of gum. The 5" x 8" photos are printed in a dark red duotone on thin glossy stock. The back is blank. The pictures on the premiums are the same as on the player's [R318] Batter-Up card. The extent of the premium checklist is unknown."

Today, only six player's are known for the ultra-rare set, with only one or two examples known for each player. This is a remarkably rare and amazing find for R318 set collectors and type card collectors alike.

This lower-grade card of Pepper Martin presents very well with two small pinholes near the top center and some moderate creasing (see scans for detail).

More information about the 1934-36 Batter Up Premium set (including image comparisons between the regular issue cards and the premiums) are provided on the Old Cardboard website.

1951 Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars --
Eddie Collins (HOF)
$410

A really exceptional card from a 1951 Topps set titled "Connie Mack's All-Time All-Star Team." The 11 cards in the set are die-cut so that the upper background can be removed and the base folded to enable a free-standing card. Doing so, however, significantly reduces the value of the card.

This example featuring Eddie Collins has the background intact and has never been folded. It is in excellent condition with barely any signs of wear (see scans for detail).

Although scarce, this set is among the first Topps series produced and is highly prized among collectors.

Further details about this Topps Connie Mack's All-Stars set are provided on the Old Cardboard website.

1934 R310 Butterfinger with overprint ad at top -- Bob O'Farrell

This card of Cincinnati Reds catcher Bob O'Farrell is from a set of premiums used to promote the Butterfinger candy brand of Curtis Company. The card is from a subset of the main R310 Butterfinger series that has two significant variations: (1) it has a Butterfinger ad overprint at the top of the card and (2) it is printed on heavy (rigid) cardboard stock.

The O'Farrell card offered here displays very nicely. Note the small stain soft corner at the lower left (see high-resolution scans for more detail.

Further details about thw R310 Butterfinger set are provided on the Old Cardboard website.

ALSO AVAILABLE: A card (also with ad overprint) featuring Tex Carleton ($295) is also available in slightly higher grade (without stain). Please contact editor@oldcardboard.com for additional information.

Lefty Grove (HOF)
$265

The Grove card offered here displays very attractively. It has light glue stains from being mounted to an album and 1/4 inch tears and mild creasing in the lower right (see high-resolution scans for detail).

Further details about this R310 Butterfinger set are provided on the Old Cardboard website.

1950 R423 (Three 13-Player Strips
with COBB plus 21 other HOFers)
$1,315

An incredibly high number of HOFers (22; more than half) are included in these three 13-card strips of tiny cards once extracted from arcade gum-ball machines.

The 22 HOFers are: Ty Cobb, Joe DiMaggio, Christy Mathewson, Larry Doby, Bob Feller, Bill Dickey, Pee Wee Reese, Duke Snider, Casey Stengel, Johnny Mize, Frankie Frisch, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, Al Simmons, Joe Medwick, Richie Ashburn, Ralph Kiner, Hal Newhouser, Red Schoendienst, Dazzy Vance, Harry Heilmann and Paul Waner.

Together, the three strips feature 39 of the 119 players in the R423 set. The card backs picture a stylized view of a baseball infield over an orange background.

Ruth #1

Ruth #2

Ruth #3
1949 Leaf Premium Trio --
Ruth, Ruth and Ruth
$6,520

This spectacular group from the 1949 Leaf Premium series includes all three Ruth variations in the set.

The set of premiums was used to promote the 1949 Leaf baseball regular gum card set. One black-and-white premium is said to have been packed with each 20 wax-pack box of Leaf Gum displayed on the retailer's countertop. According to text on the back of the regular cards, a premium could be obtained by redeeming 10 of the wax pack wrappers.

All three cards have moderate flaws as reflected in the price for the lot. Most notably, Ruth #1 and Ruth #2 in the scans have both vertical and horizontal creasing from being folded long ago. Also, it appears that about one quarter of an inch has been trimmed from the border around the perimeter of Ruth #3.

Click images to see high-resolution scans for condition detail. Please contact us with any questions.

Overall, this truly impressive trio would be a welcome addition to any vintage collector's advanced collection.

Further details about this premium set are provided on the Old Cardboard website.

1936 R314 Type 1 Goudey "Wide Pens" Near Master Set (120/121; Includes DiMaggio Rookie!!)
$1,950

This popular and widely collected series was issued in 1936 as in-store premiums to promote Goudey Gum products. The set has since been assigned the ACC number R314 (Type 1, with "Litho. in U. S. A." printed in the lower right border).

Notably, the set contains a Rookie Card for Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio, along with cards featuring more than two dozen additional HOFers. Further, the only variation card in the set (that of HOFer Lloyd Waner without the "Litho in U.S.A." tag at the bottom) is included.

The only card needed to complete the R314 Type 1 master set is that of Gabby Hartnett, which should be relatively easy to acquire in decent shape for under $40.

The DiMaggio/McCarthy card has a very small pin hole at the top middle that detracts very little from the overall appeal (see high-res front and back scans). The card of HOFer Hank Greenberg has been graded SGC 3 (VG). The grades of other cards in the set average around Good, but vary widely with some lower (including some with writing on back) and some higher (very clean with sharp corners). All cards are completely intact (i.e., no missing chips, corners, etc.) and present well as an overall set.

Note: A Set Profile, Checklist and Gallery of Cards for the R314 set is provided on the Old Cardboard website.

Purchase

1933 R338 Goudey Sport Kings -- Carl Hubbell
$570

The 1933 Goudey Sport Kings set is an attractively designed 48-card series contains only three baseball players--Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb and Carl Hubbell. Numerous other leading atheletes representing a total of eighteen different sports are also found in the set. The set is considered to be the pre-eminant multi-sport "Champions" issue of the period.

Common to all card fronts is a white border with a red "Sport Kings Gum" banner at the top. A "waist-up" color image of the subject is displayed over a solid colored background. The subject's name is printed in white over a black panel across the bottom. Silouetted action images depicting the subject's sport add an unusual and interesting style to the card design.

The Carl Hubbard card offered here has several slight wrinkles (click on images to enlarge). Otherwise, the card has sharp corners and would grade EX+. Further details about this popular set are provided on the Old Cardboard website.

Purchase

1933 Uncle Jacks Candy--Complete Color Type Set
plus Coupon & Gum in Original Wrapper
$5,050

This very scarce 1933 R317 Uncle Jacks Candy Color Type Set encompasses examples of all five color tints that were used in printing the card fronts. The colors are red, purple, blue, green and sepia. Further, all five cards are graded by SGC and four of the five players featured on the cards (Leo "Gabby" Hartnett: SGC 3; Bill Terry (SGC 2), Frank Frisch: SGC3 and Al Simmons: SGC 1) are now in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Only Wes Ferrell (SGC 2), who played in two all-star games and the 1938 World Series, has not been elected into the BB-HOF.

The blank backs are generally very clean except for some paper loss/gain from previous mounting on the back of the Simmons card and a small "1" (about 1/8-inch long) marked in the top left corner of the Hartnett example. No other marks, stains, creases or tears.

BONUS: In addition, an extremely rare coupon and two sticks of gum securely wrapped inside an original wrapper used in distributing the cards and gum are included in the offered lot. The coupon is noticeably stained and the brittle gum is broken in several places, but the package remains intact as originally packed (select image to enlarge).

Further details about this popular set are provided on the Old Cardboard website. Interested collectors are also invited to contact us with questons about the R317 set or the condition of the cards.
